Bookbug — Last updated: October 15, 2026

Bookbug ("the app", "we", "us") is a reading journal and shelf for the books you own. This policy says what the app does with your data. It is short because there is not much to say.

Summary

Your shelf, your books, your notes, your reading sessions and the photos you take of book spines stay on your device. There is no account, no ads and no tracking. The app talks to three outside services: Open Library, when you search for a book by title; RevenueCat (with Apple), to handle your purchase; and PostHog, for anonymous usage counts.

What Bookbug stores on your device

None of this is sent to us or to anyone else:

Spine photos are processed on your device. The camera is used only to scan a spine onto your shelf. Bookbug does not sync your shelf through iCloud. If you use iCloud Backup or an iTunes/Finder backup for your phone, your device backup includes Bookbug's data like any other app's, under your own backup settings.

Notifications

Reminders (your nightly reading reminder, the end of a reading session, and, if you ask for it, one note before a free trial ends) are scheduled on your device. They are not sent from a server. You can turn them off in Settings.

Book search (Open Library)

When you search for a book by title, the text you type is sent to openlibrary.org, and cover pictures are loaded from covers.openlibrary.org. Open Library is run by the Internet Archive; like any website it can see your IP address with the request. Bookbug does not send anything else to Open Library, and it does not keep a search history on a server.

Purchases (Apple and RevenueCat)

Payments are handled by Apple. Bookbug uses RevenueCat to check which plan you have. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID that the app creates, your purchase records for Bookbug, and the technical details that come with any request (your IP address, device model, OS and app version, and a vendor device identifier). It never receives your shelf, your books or your photos.

Anonymous usage counts (PostHog)

Anonymous usage counts go to PostHog (US): which screens are seen and which plan is tapped, under a random device ID, with no name, email, book or photo, no ads and no tracking. The same request carries the app's lifecycle events (installs, opens, updates), your app version and build, device model and OS, and your IP address (which we do not store). The random ID is also given to RevenueCat so a purchase can be counted against the screens that led to it. You can turn this off at any time in Settings under "Share anonymous usage counts": nothing more is sent, and any counts not yet sent are deleted. Paid access never depends on it. "Delete everything on this device" also starts a new random ID and drops any counts not yet sent.

What we do not do

Deleting your data

Deleting the app removes its data from your device. "Delete everything on this device" in Settings erases your shelf, notes, sessions, photos and settings without deleting the app. RevenueCat keeps an anonymous ID and purchase records for billing and support; to ask for those to be deleted, write to us at the address below.

Children

Bookbug does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
